Who is CHOP NC for?
Saying to yourself: "But I'm no historian --- I can't even remember my passwords, much less who invented the spork or who invented the bagel slicing contraption at Cup a Joe: Careme? Escoffier? Mrs. Fields?", doesn't matter. This isn't a group for or of official card-carrying historians; although we hope we will count many of those esteemed folks amongst our numbers. It's a group for people who are interested in food and culinary history, who like finding and sharing the stories, the cultural context, the people and places and things around which cooking thrives.
Founder, Nancie McDermott
I’m a food writer and cookbook author, with a passion for food and culinary history and traditions, the people and stories behind a given dish, meal, or cuisine. Traveling has been important to me all my life; the three years I spent as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand sparked my passion for Asian culinary traditions in particular. As a Southerner by birth, I had the blessing of growing up on biscuits, tomato sandwiches, deviled eggs, black-eyed peas, poundcake and egg custard pie. In Thailand I fell in love with lemongrass, lime leaves, coconut milk, fiery curries, and mangoes and papayas, both ripe and unripe.
These days I’m back home in North Carolina, living in Chapel Hill and cooking dinner for my family most nights. It’s an honor and a pleasure to have you stop by.
We are in the very first stages of forming this group, so we'd love to hear from you and have you join our table! We create programs that we want to attend. We invite speakers and presenters from near (mostly, such a resource we have right here in River City!!!) and sometimes far. In terms of the far ones, we raise funds to pay expenses so that authors and speakers who are not already otherwise available here, can come here and share their stories (and sell their books if they have them). We come up with brilliant fascinating fun ways to raise those funds, over time; we share any extra with good causes around food, books, and community right here in our area. We host events that are open to the public and insofar as possible, free or inexpensive. We have membership fee which is small so we can be an organization and include people who want to take part. Questions? Ideas? Ready, set, GO!
